CRANE, Walter // Calendar, 1889. (Edinburgh: Scottish Union & National Insurance Company)
A fully-functional calendar for 2019. Large chromolithograph on card-stock (40 x 48 cm.), with hanging string still in-tact; some moderate wear to corners. Elaborately-illustrated by Walter Crane. With wealth of Company details printed to verso, including information about the Company's finances and history, details about its life and fire insurance policies, and annual pay rates and schedules.
Corporate mythology. Walter Crane here illustrates an history of Scottish heroes and heroines, as they crowd the borders of this 1889 calendar; a procession culminating in the saintly image of Sir Walter Scott, seated plushly. Thus is Scott remembered by the Scottish Union & National Insurance Company (the providers of this calendar), as their very first Honorary Governor (est. 1824) and "the greatest Scotchman of his day." With a single OCLC record discovered (NLS).
